In 2005 ASELSI started its own program for those with physical disabilities, a service unprecedented in the El Quiché department. The program began with Jennifer Hoines, PT, training local workers in how to care for children with disabilities, yet another way we train and equip the saints. We started with seven local workers and ten children. Today, under the direction of Shesita, our Guatemalan PT, we provide weekly treatment to over seventy children and 20 adults in CAF (an acronym for the Spanish: Centro de Asistencia Fisiomotriz). Families are discovering there are options for their children with special needs. ASELSI continues to provide ongoing education for our local workers to enable them to provide the best possible care to all of our patients.
All of our services are offered free of charge because of the faithful support of donors. Your gift of $30/month or more can provide services for one child. If you would like to donate, click here.
You can also give to this program through our ASELSI Alternative Gift Catalog.
Shesita Rivera or Shes, as we call her, has been part of ASELSI since she was a young girl. Her father is a member of the ASELSI board of directors. Her parents, wanting to help her keep the English she learned during the time they lived in the states, would allow her to help translate for medical teams. She is back at ASELSI, but this time as a full time staff member, having received her degree as a licensed physical therapist in Guatemala. Shes started volunteering when she could take time from her studies. Our staff, patients, and families have quickly embraced this energetic, young women with a heart for therapy, missions and serving the Lord.
We would love for Shes to stay on with us, since she is a great addition to CAF. But we need an additional $600 USD a month to do so.
Would you prayerfully considering helping us continue to expand and grow our center for physical motor assistance by contributing to CAF? Your donation will help us not keep Shes, but invest in the many people we serve. Click here and designate your donation to Shes or CAF in the memo line.
